Two generations of Georgian-Polish patriots murdered fighting for the homeland

Arkadiusz Skhirtladze left Georgia after the Soviet invasion and became a Polish army captain; he was executed at Katyn with his Polish brothers.

His daughter Irena was in the Home Army during the Warsaw Uprising and killed in action.

Cadet Arkadi (Arkadiusz) Skhirtladze left his homeland after the Soviet Russian forces occupied Georgia in 1921. He went to Poland and graduated from the Polish military school, and joined the Polish army.

In 1939, while serving as a flight instructor at the military aviation school, Arkadi was wounded during one of the Luftwaffe strikes.

Because of that, he was evacuated to the east. While having medical treatment, he was captured by the invading Red Army, which stabbed Poland in the back.

After about a year of imprisonment, Captain Skhirtladze was executed along with his Georgian and Polish brothers in arms during the Katyn Massacre.

Later his brave teenage daughter Irena joined Battalion Parasol (Umbrella), a Scouting battalion of the Home Army, the primary Polish resistance movement during World War II, and participated in the Warsaw Uprising of 1944.

She was killed in action on the 14th of September. Irena Skhirtladze was awarded the Cross of Valour for deeds of valor and courage on the battlefield.
